What gets scored

Strategic AlignmentDoes leadership treat procurement as overhead or as a lever?
Sourcing & Supplier ManagementScorecards, RFx cadence, and whether you know your critical suppliers from your big ones.
Spend Visibility & Master DataHow long it takes to pull a clean spend report — and whether you trust it.
Process DisciplineWritten policy, approval thresholds, contract renewals that don’t ambush you.
Risk & ResilienceSingle-source exposure, tariff exposure, and what happens when one supplier goes dark.
People & CapabilityWhether your team is sourcing or firefighting — and what leaves when your best buyer does.

How it works

  1. Book fifteen minutesPick a time. Two quick questions when you book so I know what you build before we start.
  2. We score six categories, liveOne question per category, 0 to 3. I ask, you answer, we talk about the ones that sting. No prep required on your end.
  3. You get your score and your two prioritiesWhere you land on a four-level maturity scale, and the two categories worth attacking first. I send the full 30-question instrument afterward so you can run it on your own team.

Where the questions come from

This isn’t a survey I invented to generate sales calls. The scoring model is adapted from the ASCM Supply Chain Operations Reference (SCOR) Digital Standard and the ISM Capability Model — the two frameworks Fortune 500 procurement organizations use to score themselves — with maturity descriptions cross-checked against CAPS Research benchmarking data.

What I did was scope them down. SCOR alone carries 250+ metrics, which is useless to a manufacturer with three people in purchasing. This is the procurement slice, sized for a $5M–$150M leadership team that needs an answer this quarter.

Give those references to your CFO when she asks where the questions came from.

I’m John Kill — 25 years leading supply chain and procurement across automotive, defense, aerospace, and advanced manufacturing. MBA in purchasing, Six Sigma Green Belt, US Army veteran. I’ve negotiated a $50M six-year motor contract, taken over an $8.6M vendor book in an emergency with zero line stoppages, and helped a manufacturer grow revenue 32% by cutting lead times to a quarter of the competition’s.

Most mid-market manufacturers have never had a chief procurement officer. What they have is a very good buyer who’s been there twenty years and knows every part number by heart. That’s worth something. It isn’t a sourcing strategy — and the distance between the two is where the margin went.

Built for manufacturers between $5M and $150M in revenue. Companies that size rarely need a full-time chief procurement officer. Most need one about a day a week. The Health Check tells you whether that’s true for you before you spend a dollar finding out.
